Mailboxes

Mailboxes are often a source of both function and fun. Homeowners have become very creative in how they display the container in which their mail is placed. Moreover, decorative mailboxes have become popular as well.

Mailboxes For Decoration And Function

A large number of mailboxes that are made for decoration purposes also provide a function-to hold mail. Some of the most unique mailbox designs include the ones shaped like a farm person, household animal, or emergency vehicle (i.e. antique fire truck).

More elegant mailbox designs include those that are made to resemble a miniature treasure chest or safe. Others are shaped like a rustic vacation cottage house or old town building.

A large number of these functional mailboxes that are described above have been especially painted and designed for individual customers. Those who have purchased these specialty mailboxes have even gone as far as to have them personalized.

One of the most unusual ideas for a mailbox is one that used the body silhouette of a person for the post of the box, and the “head” of it is where the mail is held. The head of this type of mailbox could be made in proportion to a regular human head (perhaps with an opening at the mouth of it).

However, more often than not it might just be in the shape of the simple classic thin metal mailbox-but painted a solid color to match the color of the body silhouette. The possibilities are endless when it comes to making mailboxes for holding postal items.

Decorative Mailboxes

Other boxes for holding mail may not necessarily be ones that are made to code in order to hold mail. These are usually the ones that are smaller-scaled in size. For instance, valentines mailboxes might be set out for people to placed small special occasion notes inside during certain times of the year.

Similarly-made decorative ones could be placed outside to create a winter or fall scene during certain other times of celebration. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two holidays during which decorative mailboxes might be used.

Another great use for novelty mailboxes during the spring and summer months (and even in the fall) would be for making bird feeders. Of course, the birds would enter the front of the mailbox, which usually would be left open.

Materials That Mailboxes Are Made From

Some of the new mailboxes have been made from a durable plastic or similar material. However, a majority of the novelty (decorative) and specialty functional mailboxes (ones that actually hold mail) are made from metal.

A large number of them have been made from wood, and occasionally materials such as stone might be used (especially in the making of the mailbox stand). Some boxes are meant to be mounted on the front of the home near the front entrance. Others are meant to be placed on the side of the road, usually not to far from the driveway of a home.
